Furniture Cleaning Best Practices

Taking Care of Your Furniture: Breaking Things Down

One of the most important things that you can do to protect your high-quality furniture involves avoiding placing any one particular item in direct sunlight. Sunlight causes fading, and this happens faster than you think. In many cases, fading is also irreversible. Depending on the layout of your room and the size of your windows, this may not always be possible – so be sure to invest in curtains, blinds or other large window treatments for added protection.

Likewise, you’ll want to avoid extreme temperature changes in the environment as this, too, can harm your items. Don’t place couches in front of heating and cooling vents, for example, and be sure to keep everything away from any radiators that may be present in your home.

In the unfortunate event that you spill something on a couch or a chair, don’t worry – as long as you act fast, you’ll be able to rectify the situation. Just clean up spills immediately and always use a dabbing or blotting motion with a clean, dry rag – never wipe as you run the risk of making any stains worse than they already are.

Finally, try to keep any and all plastics or rubber materials away from your furniture. These materials may include lamp bases, notebooks, placemats, and more. These materials actually have ingredients that can damage the finish, so be sure to avoid them. If you have to place a plastic or rubber item on something like a wooden coffee table, always use cloth or felt pads for additional protection.
